Saltie Girl

Newbury Street's celebrated seafood bar — where tinned fish is an art form, the lobster roll is legendary, and every plate tells a story.

A Seafood Bar Like No Other

Saltie Girl isn't just one of Back Bay's best restaurants — it's one of the most distinctive seafood experiences in the country. Tucked into a narrow Newbury Street storefront at number 281, this seafood bar and raw bar has redefined what a neighborhood restaurant can be: intimate, unapologetically luxurious, and obsessed with quality in a way that shows on every plate.

The concept is deceptively simple: pristine seafood, an exceptional raw bar, a curated collection of tinned fish from around the world, and a wine list that leans heavily into Champagne and coastal whites. But the execution is anything but simple. Chef and owner Kathy Sidell built Saltie Girl around the idea that seafood should be celebrated the way great wine is — with provenance, with care, and with a sense of occasion. The tinned fish program alone features dozens of varieties from Portugal, Spain, France, and beyond, each served with its own accompaniments on custom boards.

The space itself is part of the appeal. With roughly 50 seats split between the main dining room and the bar, Saltie Girl has the feel of a European seafood bistro transported to Newbury Street. The lighting is warm, the marble bar is where the regulars sit, and the energy on a Friday night is electric without being overwhelming. It's the kind of place where a quiet Tuesday dinner for two is just as good as a celebratory Saturday night.

More Than a Meal

What makes Saltie Girl special isn't just the food — it's the way the whole experience comes together. The restaurant operates on a philosophy that every detail matters: the weight of the silverware, the sourcing of the ice for the raw bar, the particular way a tin of Portuguese sardines is presented on its own board with house-made accompaniments.

The raw bar is the heartbeat of the restaurant. Oysters arrive daily from both coasts — Wellfleets from Cape Cod, Kusshis from British Columbia, Island Creeks from Duxbury — and are shucked to order by bartenders who know every farm by name. The towers are architectural: tiered platters of oysters, littlenecks, shrimp, lobster, and crab, built to be the centerpiece of any table.

The wine list is equally considered. Heavy on Champagne, coastal whites, and natural wines that pair naturally with seafood, it avoids the obvious and rewards curiosity. The cocktail program has its own identity too — citrus-forward, spirit-driven, and designed to complement rather than compete with the food.

Service at Saltie Girl strikes the right balance: knowledgeable without being pretentious, attentive without being intrusive. The staff knows the menu cold and can guide you through the tinned fish selection with genuine enthusiasm. It's the kind of place where you trust your server's recommendation and are always glad you did.

Saltie Girl's tinned fish program is arguably the most ambitious in Boston, and one of the best in the country. The collection spans dozens of varieties — sardines, mackerel, tuna belly, octopus, mussels, razor clams — sourced from small-batch producers in Portugal, Spain, France, and the Pacific Northwest.

Each tin is served on an olive wood board with house-made accompaniments: Triscuits, fresh lemon, pickled vegetables, and sauces tailored to the specific fish. It's a format that turns a humble pantry staple into something genuinely special — a tasting experience that rewards attention and invites conversation.

For newcomers, the staff is happy to curate a selection. For regulars, there are always new arrivals to discover. The program rotates seasonally, with limited-edition tins and rare vintages appearing on the board when available. It's become one of the restaurant's defining features and a reason people return again and again.
